Nerikomi

Nerikomi, or layering, is a technique that involves adding coloured stains to clay, then forming designs using several or multiple colours. Each piece is initially flat, then is shaped using a mold. Finally a foot is attached using a pottery wheel. Most of my pieces are made using porcelain clay.

Each piece takes many hours to create and there are many opportunities for things to go wrong! However, it provides an opportunity to create beautiful and unique pieces.

Painted pieces

My first artistic interest was in drawing and painting. I've carried this interest to my pottery, where I enjoy decorating with underglazes and glazes.

Some of my pottery pieces are inspired by Japanese art, both paintings and pottery. My husband's grandfather was an artist and photographer who immigrated from Japan to Canada in the late 19th century. I've decorated some pieces based on his lovely pen and ink sketches. 

Alternate techniques

The following pieces have been either made or decorated by alternative techniques. Some are hand built, others are wheel thrown and altered.
